It's like street photography, only almost completely different.
Animals just do the darnedest things!
We learned this by leafing through a wonderfully entertaining set of photos depicting critters of every description engaged in every kind of shenanigan. As it turns out, the aptly named Comedy Wildlife Photography Awards deliver precisely that: a marvelously funny collection of images. If some of these beasts don’t end up doing sets at The Comedy Store, we’re going to be be mighty surprised.
Christopher Jobson has done yeoman service in assembling some of the highlights from the competition. “There are quite a few annual wildlife and nature photography awards these days, and it’s nearly impossible to keep up with them all,” he apologizes in advance, explaining that if you’ve got to add another such contest to the pile, this one is a strong contender. The Comedy Wildlife Photography Awards were founded just this past year by Paul Joynson-Hicks; the idea, which you may already have put together for yourself, is for photographers much like yourself to submit… in Jobson’s words… “outrageous and weird photos of animals doing, well, funny stuff.” Well put, Jobson.
“Oh, come on,” you may well be thinking. “How funny can animals be? They eat food, sleep, and occasionally end up in the news for swallowing someone whole, or being shot by a dentist.”
You are not alone in your skepticism, o hard-to-impress reader; indeed, that’s what we thought until just a very few minutes ago. But darn it, these photographs have won us over completely. How about we show you a few of the images and let you decide whether these particular animals are funnier than your average bear?
Here’s the winner: A terribly amusing rodent with (this is our guess) the Hound of the Baskervilles on his tail.
Here’s one that was among the ‘highly commended’ entries: a nest of owls who have been looking at just a few too many Grumpy Cat memes.
Also ‘highly commended’ was this image of a primate doing, as nearly as we can tell, t’ai chi.
Or this one, the Silver Runner-up: An elk (or is he a caribou?) saying… according to the caption… “You didn’t see me.”
And this fellow clearly thinks these pictures are as funny as we do.
Aw, heck… here are some more. Because: funny animals.
